Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander

Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander

Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distro based on debian. Many linux users consider it the ‘champion’ distro. Named after the Southern African philosophy of ubuntu (literally, "human-ness"), which often is translated as "humanity towards others" or "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity" as Wikipedia says.  Click ubunto.org for more info. For beginners like me, Ubuntu could be a good ditro to begin with linux. The interface is easy to navigate, and it has elegance.

Ubuntu 13.10 is latest release of Ubuntu. Powered by Unity, I guess there really is a difference. After trying Linux Mint 13, I thought it’ll be a good idea to try Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander. After acquiring the installation file, I made a live USB/Flash drive and booted it on my pc. The interface at the start has, I should say a difference from Mint 13. The boot was also a bit faster than Mint 13.

As I said, the interface is easy to navigate. The overall interface really has style.  Even so, I’d still prefer Mint 13 over Ubuntu 13.10. Mint 13 may be low on graphics but I had no problem with my drivers. On the other side, my drivers, well some, seem to have trouble running on Ubuntu. I have a Lenovo g480 notebook with only 2gb ram, no dedicated  video graphics memory and only 1.8gHz Intel Celeron so it could be classified as a low spec laptop. Still, it’s not an old model, not really. Other than that, everything seemed well on my first try.

On the multimedia side, VLC media player is note included in the package, so you have to download additional codecs in order to play all media files. The Libre Office is great, I just had some trouble with the menus since I’m used to MS Office. Response was great.

Overall, I’ll give Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander a 9/10. It’s a good start for beginners but on the part of windows users who play mp3, avi, mp4 and other media files, downloading codecs may slow you down a bit.
