Here in the
Philippines, there is no doubt that Windows dominates the market. Almost all entities,
offices and homes use windows.
Windows 7 was released on November 2006. The same year Linux Mint had its debut. Windows 7 seemed to be just an improved Windows Vista. Because Vista had many issues maybe Windows 7 was just a complete overhaul of it. Even with the known bugs, crashes, and threats Windows still continued to top the market. What separates Windows from other operating system is its “plug
and play”. The installation process is easy and clean. Adding to that, there
are thousands of applications available. Its window interface is also easy to
use and navigate giving way for new users to learn fast. The only problem is the high usage of system resources which
sometimes result to system lag Windows 7 like any other release is also prone
to threats like viruses, worms and other scripts.
Linux
has been known for its different ‘flavors’ or distros each with different
purposes. One popular Linux distro is the Mint which is known for its features,
one is design. Linux Mint was founded the same year as windows 7, just a little
early. Being an open-source, it means you download, and modify it. The
interface looks a little like windows 7. For beginners, Linux Mint 13 could be
a good option. Since it’s based on Ubuntu, I think a lot of its codes are
written in python. Viruses are unknown to Linux Mint so no antivirus programs,
no system boost software needed. It means no extra cost. You also don't have to worry about os corruption because no recovery disc is needed like windows, all you gotta do is google the error.
Like
Linux, Solaris is also an open-source operating system. Solaris Is a UNIX based
system written in C. In its old releases, the GUIs that were used include Open
Windows, and or Gnome. Solaris 10 features a new GUI. The Java Desktop System (JDS) which look a little like Windows. The new GUI reshaped its look and functionality. It is also free from threats like viruses. Since it is released by oracle, the deployment of Oracle products is ensured to go smoothly. Above all, its security, performance and predictive self-healing may just be enough to distinguish it from other operating systems.
Overall, Windows 7 in
its current standing may be the best choice. Given that there are a lot of applications
available. Its plug and play feature also makes its functions and processes easy to operate and
learn. Last but not least, almost every PC manufacturer support windows
operating systems. On the part of Linux
Mint 13, it may be a good choice for those who are tired of the lags and
crashes in Windows 7. Also, its speed and elegance makes it stay inline of the
competition. For Windows users who are afraid of migrating because of their
apps and games, their is a software called “Wine” which could make windows
applications run on Linux. Maybe not all, but with a few tweaks and tricks all
could go smoothly. You just need a little research and dedication. The
installation of Linux is not that hard. Research on Linux terms may be needed. Solaris
10 can be a tough competitor when it comes to servers. Its security is already proven which makes it a good choice for enterprise users. I think all it needs is promotion or exposure.
However, and the end of the day, each will have their own places. Each having unique components and features. With advantages and disadvantages.
