While Linux is the most popular Open Source System, I believe Solaris is considered as the number one (1) UNIX based Enterprise Operating System. With it's new realese: Solaris 10 and Solaris 11, it is becoming to capture little by little the attention of some users. Like other Linux distros, Solaris 10 is proven to be competent on performance, reliability and security especially on SPARC and x86 systems. Also, all oracle software are tested to run with no problems. This could be a good news for those who use Oracle related software and services.
For software updates and upgrades, the user doesn't need to install the new release and worry for software or application changes during the migration because of its Guaranteed Binary Compatibility. When it comes to file corruption, Solaris 10 provides end-to-end protection for the integrity of your data. It also has a self-healing feature like windows update. The only difference is unlike windows update in any Windows OS, Solaris' self-healing system is continuous. Its GUI has also improved with Java Desktop System (JDS). With JDS the environment seems to look a little like Windows.
Solaris may be a good choice, it may even be better than other OS with its proven security and other high-end features especially when it comes to servers and other enterprise use. However, many users still have no knowledge that Solaris exist. With this, I believe what Solaris needs is a little exposure so that many users could experience its look and performance and could give comments and suggestions which could make its development even better. From 1-10, I'll probably give Solaris 10 a 9/10. It may not be as elegant as other operating systems but when it comes to worst case scenarios, it may best other systems.
